5 arrested in sunglasses thefts totaling $40K from Valley Plaza mall: BPD
BAKERSFIELD, California โ Five individuals are in police custody following a major retail theft ring operation targeting high-end eyewear at the Valley Plaza Mall. The Bakersfield Police Department (BPD) announced the arrests on Monday, May 27, 2024, after a coordinated investigation into multiple incidents that resulted in the theft of approximately $40,000 worth of sunglasses.
According to police reports, the suspects targeted specific retailers within the mall over several weeks. Utilizing distraction techniques and tools designed to bypass security tags, the group managed to walk away with dozens of premium designer sunglasses during each visit. Retailers reported the recurring losses, which prompted BPD's specialized retail theft unit to launch a targeted investigation.
Coordinated Sting Operation Leads to Arrests
Using surveillance footage, license plate readers, and undercover officers, investigators identified a pattern and anticipated the group's return to the mall. On the day of the arrests, officers observed the suspects entering the shopping center and attempting another theft. They were intercepted by BPD officers as they tried to exit the mall with stolen merchandise.
A search of the suspects' vehicle revealed bags filled with stolen designer eyewear, tools for disabling security devices, and cash. All five suspects were taken into custody without incident and booked into the Kern County Jail on charges of grand theft, conspiracy, and possession of burglary tools.
Addressing Organized Retail Crime
The Bakersfield Police Department emphasized its commitment to combating organized retail crime, which has become a growing concern for local business owners and shoppers. "Organized retail theft is not a victimless crime," said a BPD spokesperson. "It drives up prices for consumers and threatens the safety of retail workers. We will continue to work closely with mall security and store owners to arrest those who target our local businesses."
The investigation remains active to determine if the suspects are linked to similar retail thefts in other parts of California.
