Man Charged Over Spate of Vehicle Thefts and Hit-and-Run in Aberdeen
Arrest Follows Widespread Weekend Crime Spree
Police Scotland have successfully apprehended and charged a 33-year-old man in connection with a significant and disruptive spate of vehicle-related crimes across Aberdeen. Over the course of a single weekend, spanning Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9, officers received multiple alarming reports from the public. The suspect's alleged crime spree included an astonishing 11 separate thefts and attempted thefts from parked vehicles, alongside the outright theft of a car and involvement in a hit-and-run crash. The incidents were heavily concentrated across the Craigiebuckler, Hazlehead, and West End residential areas of the city. The accused is now expected to appear before the Aberdeen Sheriff Court.
Police Issue Security Warning
Following the arrest, Detective Constable Andrew Yule addressed the concerns of residents, stating: "We understand how distressing this kind of crime can be in our local communities and take all such reports seriously." He used the opportunity to issue a public plea, adding: "We encourage owners to review their own vehicle security, as taking a few extra precautions can protect your homes and vehicles."
Overnight Vehicle Security Advice
Opportunistic car thieves frequently operate late at night, moving quickly from street to street testing door handles. To minimize your risk of becoming a victim:
- Ensure your vehicle is physically locked by checking the door handle before walking away; do not rely solely on the visual or audio confirmation from your key fob.
- Never leave any valuables, including loose change, charging cables, or sunglasses, visible inside the cabin, as these can easily tempt a thief to smash a window.
- Consider installing a high-quality, motion-activated security camera or a smart doorbell overlooking your driveway to deter criminals and capture vital evidence if a crime does occur.
