Murder Investigation Launched After Man Dies Following Belfast Break-In

Tragic Outcome Following Holywood Road Burglary

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has officially launched a murder investigation following the tragic death of a man who was severely beaten during a residential break-in. The victim, identified by police as 51-year-old Nicholas Gordon, widely known as Nicky, passed away in the hospital on Saturday. His death occurred just four days after he was the victim of a brutal assault. The violent incident took place during an aggravated burglary at an apartment building located on Holywood Road in east Belfast at approximately 4:45 am on Tuesday, May 12. Police initially responded to distressing reports that a group of intruders had forced entry into the apartment building and viciously attacked a male resident inside.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

In the immediate aftermath of the assault, two individualsโ€”a 24-year-old man and a 49-year-old womanโ€”were arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary with intent to commit grievous bodily harm. However, police have confirmed that both suspects have since been released unconditionally following further enquiries. The PSNI is now urgently appealing to the public for assistance. Detectives are asking anyone who was in the vicinity of Holywood Road around 4:45 am on May 12 and who may have witnessed any suspicious activity to come forward. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers.

Apartment Building Security Advice

Communal living spaces can sometimes provide criminals with easier access to multiple residences if main doors are left unsecured. Residents should remain vigilant:

  • Never "tailgate" or allow unknown individuals to follow you through secure communal entrance doors into the main apartment building.
  • Ensure your individual apartment door is fitted with a heavy-duty deadbolt and a reinforced strike plate to resist forced entry.
  • If you notice communal locks or intercom systems are broken, report the maintenance issue to your building manager or landlord immediately as an urgent security risk.
