Belfast Court Jails Man for Knifepoint Co-op Raid as Accomplice Nephew Avoids Prison
A Belfast man has been handed a prison sentence following a terrifying knifepoint robbery at a local Co-op convenience store. The court heard details of the raid, during which staff were threatened with a blade before cash was stolen from the premises. In contrast, the defendant's nephew, who acted as an accomplice, was spared custody and instead ordered to complete community service.
During the sentencing hearing, the judge noted the severe psychological impact of such armed robberies on retail workers, who are frequently subjected to life-threatening threats while performing public-facing roles. The prosecution outlined how the older suspect brandished the weapon to intimidate employees, while the younger relative played a supporting role in the getaway and coordination of the crime.
Defense counsel argued that the nephew had been influenced by his older relative and displayed genuine remorse. Ultimately, the court chose a rehabilitative path for the youth, citing his lack of significant prior record, whereas the primary perpetrator received a custodial sentence reflecting the gravity of committing an armed heist in a residential neighborhood.
