Bradford Ranked Eighth in UK for Doorstep Parcel Thefts

Bradford Named Top Target for 'Porch Piracy'

As online shopping continues to boom, a new nationwide study has officially named Bradford as one of the worst cities in the UK for parcel theft. The research, conducted by home and contents specialists iSelect, ranked UK cities based on their vulnerability to "porch piracy"—the opportunistic theft of unattended packages left on doorsteps or in communal areas. Bradford was handed a concerning parcel theft risk score of 43.46 out of 100, placing it eighth overall in the national top 10 list. The data revealed that Bradford experiences an average of 8.95 thefts for every 1,000 parcels delivered. Regionally, neighboring Leeds ranked even worse, taking fourth place with a score of 53.51.

The Working-From-Home Factor

Nationally, Manchester was identified as the city most at risk, scoring a massive 91.43 out of 100, followed closely by Newcastle and Bristol. Conversely, Derby was crowned the safest city for deliveries. The study highlighted that working-from-home (WFH) trends heavily influence theft rates; cities with higher percentages of remote workers generally see fewer thefts because residents are home to physically receive their packages, leaving fewer parcels sitting unattended for extended periods.

Defeating Doorstep Thieves

With an estimated 4.2 billion parcels sent across the UK annually, opportunistic thieves are actively patrolling residential streets looking for easy targets. To protect your deliveries:

  • Always utilize tracked delivery options and actively monitor your parcel's progress via the courier's app.
  • Install a visible smart video doorbell; the mere presence of a camera is often enough to deter an opportunistic thief from approaching your door.
  • If you know you won't be home, proactively redirect the parcel to a trusted neighbor, a secure parcel locker, or a designated local collection point.
  • Invest in a lockable, heavy-duty secure parcel drop box for your front porch.
