St Mellons Break-In Linked to Major Organised Crime Group
A quiet residential street in St Mellons, Cardiff, was the setting for a highly planned heist that eventually exposed a cross-border organised crime syndicate. On June 14, 2023, a gang of professional thieves breached the home of a local mechanic, targeting a safe hidden beneath the floorboards of a bedroom.
The Cardiff Incursion
The operation was executed with military precision. The gang, led by 42-year-old Cardiff resident Ras Thomas, had carefully scouted the property. In order to carry out the theft and escape undetected, they hired two passenger vehicles and a large transit van. Disguised in black clothing, balaclavas, and thick gloves, Thomas Hagans (41) and Charlie Seeney (17) entered the home, located the safe, and ripped it from its fittings under the floor.
However, despite the careful planning, the raid yielded no financial gain. Upon escaping and forcing the safe open, the criminals discovered it was empty. This empty safe set off a chain of events that drove the gang to seek out a secondary, more violent target in Somerset later that day, resulting in a brutal armed burglary and the theft of ยฃ50,000 in jewellery.
The Police Hunt and convictions
Detectives from South Wales Police, collaborating with Avon and Somerset Constabulary, initiated a complex cross-border investigation. By utilizing forensic phone data, tracking hired vehicles via GPS, and reviewing local CCTV, investigators built an airtight case against the gang. The tracking data showed the vehicles travelling from Birmingham to St Mellons, and then onwards to Somerset.
The gang members were arrested during coordinated raids on their residences. Following a trial and sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court, the court dealt severe punishments to the syndicate's members to emphasize the trauma caused to their victims. Detective Constable Rhys Perrett praised the victims for their bravery throughout the trials, stating that these dangerous individuals have now been taken off the streets for a significant period.
