Hudo Lounge Burgled on Cowbridge Road East Amid Rising Canton Crime Wave

A popular restaurant in Canton, Cardiff, has become the latest victim of a commercial burglary spree along a busy high street, highlighting growing concerns over local crime rates and anti-social behavior. During the early hours of Monday, November 10, 2025, the Hudo Loungeโ€”part of the well-known Loungers hospitality chainโ€”was targeted by thieves who smashed a ground-floor window to gain access and stole the premises' cash register till.

Details of the Break-In

According to reports, the incident occurred under the cover of darkness. Staff and owners arrived later that morning to discover the shattered glass, and pictures from the scene showed the restaurantโ€™s front window boarded up. South Wales Police quickly launched an investigation into the commercial break-in, appealing to members of the public, nearby residents, and fellow business owners for information, CCTV, or dashcam footage from the area.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police stated:

"South Wales Police is investigating a burglary at The Hudo Lounge, Cowbridge Road East, during the early hours of yesterday (Monday, November 10). A ground floor window was smashed and the till was stolen. We recognise that being a victim of burglary is traumatic, whether itโ€™s your home, business, or workplace. Anyone with information or CCTV footage is asked to contact South Wales Police quoting 2500358243."

Traders Sound the Alarm Over High Street Security

Cowbridge Road East, a major thoroughfare in Cardiff lined with independent cafes, retail shops, and residential flats, has reportedly faced a persistent surge in criminality. Business owners in the Canton area describe dealing with public intoxication, open disorderly conduct, and near-daily shoplifting. The situation grew severe enough that in August, UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper personally visited the street to consult with local traders regarding their safety concerns.

Local business workers, such as Yagub Jollah at Jah Beauty hair and skincare store, have expressed frustration over the escalating situation. Jollah noted that shoplifting has become a daily occurrence on the street, causing constant disruption and financial losses. He called for increased police patrols to deter criminals, noting that visible officers would make thieves think twice.

Police Advice for Local Businesses

In response to the break-in at Hudo Lounge and other recent incidents, police authorities have urged Canton businesses to review their security setups. Specifically, business owners are advised to:

  • Ensure that no cash is left on the premises overnight.
  • Display clear signage stating that cash registers are empty and no money is kept inside.
  • Check and update security cameras and alarm systems.
  • Remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals loitering near shops during the early hours by calling 999.
