Cruel Burglar Jailed for 6 Years After Arson Attack on Ripley Charity Shop
Devastating Arson Attack on Charity Shop
A man whose cruel actions devastated a beloved local charity shop has been sentenced to six years in prison. The shocking incident occurred in the early hours of December 2 last year at The Children’s Society Charity shop on Oxford Street in Ripley. Michael Gibson, 49, broke into the premises, stealing a money tin and a special hamper compiled by volunteers to raise funds for struggling children over Christmas. In a callous final act, Gibson deliberately set fire to the shop before fleeing. The blaze caused extensive damage, destroying numerous public donations, and forced the emergency evacuation of a residential flat located directly above the store.
Rapid Arrest and Sentencing
Thanks to a vital description provided by a quick-thinking member of the public, police officers located and searched Gibson just minutes after he fled the scene. He was found carrying items stolen from the shop, along with four lighters. While in police custody, Gibson's appalling behaviour continued as he directed a racial slur at a restraining officer. At Derby Crown Court on June 2, Gibson pleaded guilty to burglary, arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered, and causing racially aggravated harassment. He was subsequently handed a six-year prison sentence. Temporary Detective Constable Jess Knight praised the swift police response and the invaluable assistance of the public in securing the conviction.
Community Spirit Triumphs
Despite the immense heartbreak caused by the fire, the Ripley community rallied behind The Children's Society. Local businesses, notably the Central Co-op, offered vital support, allowing the charity to continue operating via a pop-up location. Following an extensive restoration, the beloved shop officially reopened its doors on April 15, supported by the Mayor of Ripley and the wider community.
Fire Safety and Commercial Security
Arson attacks on commercial premises pose a severe risk to life and property:
- Ensure all commercial premises are fitted with modern, monitored fire alarm systems and internal sprinkler systems where viable.
- Store combustible materials, such as donated clothing or cardboard, in secure, fire-resistant containers away from external walls and letterboxes.
- Install high-quality external CCTV and security lighting to deter opportunistic criminals from targeting the property out of hours.
