New Year's Eve Train Services Disrupted Near Doncaster Following Cable Theft
DONCASTER, South Yorkshire — Thousands of rail passengers faced severe travel disruption on New Year's Eve following a targeted cable theft near Doncaster. The incident, which took place on December 31, 2023, caused widespread delays and cancellations across key national rail routes, including the vital East Coast Main Line.
British Transport Police and Network Rail engineers were dispatched to the scene immediately after signaling systems detected a fault. Upon investigation, officials discovered that a significant length of copper communication cabling had been cut and stolen. This safety-critical infrastructure is essential for controlling track signals and maintaining safe train movements.
Widespread Travel Chaos
The theft led to substantial disruption for travelers heading to New Year celebrations, with multiple operators reporting delays of up to an hour, and some services being forced to terminate early. Operators affected by the incident included:
- LNER (London North Eastern Railway): Services between London King's Cross, Yorkshire, Newcastle, and Scotland were heavily delayed.
- Hull Trains: Delays impacted routes connecting East Yorkshire with the capital.
- Northern: Local commuter routes in and around South Yorkshire experienced widespread cancellations.
Network Rail issued a strong statement condemning the theft, highlighting the danger and disruption caused by such acts. "Cable theft is not a victimless crime," a spokesperson said. "It causes thousands of minutes of delays for passengers, costs taxpayers millions of pounds to repair, and presents a severe safety risk to the railway network and the thieves themselves."
British Transport Police (BTP) have launched an active investigation into the incident. Officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity near the tracks in the Doncaster area on New Year's Eve to come forward.
