Blood in the Suburbs: Businessman Critically Injured in Machete Ambush Outside ยฃ1.75m Morningside Villa
The violent gangland war tearing through Edinburgh's underworld has spilled into one of the city's most affluent suburbs after a local businessman was brutally ambushed and hacked with machetes outside his home. The shocking attack has shattered the peace of the quiet residential neighborhood and left residents living in fear.
Ambush Outside ยฃ1.75m Morningside Villa
The victim, 54-year-old businessman David McMillan, was targeted outside his luxury ยฃ1.75 million home located on Pitcairn Grove, in the highly sought-after Greenbank and Morningside area of Edinburgh. Because of previous threats and an arson attack on his property in April, McMillan had hired a private security guard to monitor his home. Around 9:15 PM on Thursday, May 22, 2025, a grey Land Rover Discovery pulled up outside the driveway. Sensing danger, the security guard sounded his horn to alert the homeowner.
Armed with a machete to defend himself, McMillan stepped outside his front door. He was immediately confronted by a group of masked men who descended upon him. A brutal struggle ensued, and McMillan was repeatedly struck with large machetes. The security guard intervened, using a crowbar to fight off the attackers and ultimately saving McMillan's life before the gang fled the scene.
Severe Physical Injuries
McMillan sustained horrific, life-threatening injuries during the confrontation. Paramedics rushed him to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he underwent emergency surgery for deep lacerations to his head and upper body. While he survived the ordeal, the attack has left him with permanent disfigurement, severe physical scarring, and long-term trauma. The severity of the assault led prosecutors to charge the attackers with assault to severe injury, permanent disfigurement, and danger of life.
Panic and Fear in the Suburbs
The Morningside and Greenbank districts are typically known for their quiet, leafy streets, excellent schools, and high-value properties. The occurrence of a violent, gang-related machete ambush on a weekday evening has caused deep anxiety among local families. "We moved here because it is supposed to be safe," said one neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous. "To see private security guards, police tape, and armed thugs hacking someone on our street is absolutely terrifying. It feels like the gang war is right on our doorsteps." Police Scotland have increased high-visibility patrols in the area to reassure anxious residents, but many feel the neighborhood's peaceful character has been permanently shattered.
