Savage Machete Attack in Edinburgh: Balaclava-Clad Gang Ambushes Associate of Drug Kingpin
A major Police Scotland manhunt has culminated in the sentencing of three gang members involved in a brutal, targeted machete ambush on a close associate of convicted cocaine kingpin Mark Richardson. The attack, which took place in the Morningside area of Edinburgh, has laid bare the extreme violence defining the city's current gangland turf war.
The Attackers and Getaway Vehicle
The ambush was executed by a highly organized hit squad wearing dark clothing and balaclavas. The gang arrived at the scene in a grey Land Rover Discovery, which had been stolen and fitted with cloned registration plates to evade detection. Upon spotting the target, the masked passengers bolted from the vehicle armed with massive machetes, leaving the engine running and the getaway driver, 21-year-old Joshua Stewart, waiting at the wheel.
Following the attack, the suspects scrambled back into the Land Rover, which sped off through the suburban streets of Edinburgh. The vehicle was later abandoned and partially burned out in an attempt to destroy forensic evidence. However, police investigators under Operation Portaledge recovered vital trace DNA and digital footprints that eventually identified the culprits.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Police Scotland launched an extensive search operation, analyzing hours of public and private CCTV footage to trace the movements of the Land Rover Discovery before and after the attack. The breakthrough came when forensic teams linked DNA from the abandoned vehicle to known associates of rival Glasgow-based organized crime groups.
Three men were subsequently arrested and convicted for their roles in the conspiracy:
- Arran Reid (27): Jailed for eight years and four months for his direct involvement in the assault, which was deemed to have endangered the victim's life.
- Anthony Brown (50): Sentenced to five years and three months in prison after admitting his participation in the ambush.
- Joshua Stewart (21): The getaway driver, sentenced to three years and eight months in prison, followed by a one-year supervised release order.
The Cocaine Kingpin Connection
The target of the hit, David McMillan, is a known associate of Mark Richardson, one of Scotland's most notorious drug barons. Richardson, currently incarcerated, has been locked in a deadly dispute with a Dubai-based drug lord. Underworld intelligence indicates the Dubai syndicate offered significant financial bounties to rival gangs, including members linked to the Lyons and Tamo Junto (TMJ) cartels, to target Richardson's inner circle in Edinburgh. The machete attack represents a violent escalation of this international narcotics feud.
