Trusted Care Home Cleaner Jailed for Targeted Burglaries of Elderly Residents in Gateshead

A trusted cleaner who abused his position to target and burglarise elderly residents inside a Gateshead care home has been handed a prison sentence. Anthony Whitesmith, 45, of Coltsfoot Gardens, Felling, Gateshead, admitted to two counts of burglary during a hearing at Newcastle Crown Court.

Targeting the Vulnerable

The court heard that Whitesmith used his intimate knowledge of the care facility and its layout to prey upon vulnerable occupants. On the night of 7 October, Whitesmith entered the room of an elderly woman while she was asleep. He made off with several personal belongings, including her purse and a silver keepsake box engraved with her name.

Just one week later, on 14 October, Whitesmith escalated his actions. He broke into the room of another elderly resident by smashing a patio window. From this second victim, he stole ยฃ500 in cash.

Sentencing and Judicial Remarks

Sentencing Whitesmith to two years and four months, Recorder Nicholas Lumley KC condemned his actions, highlighting the breach of trust involved. Recorder Lumley noted that Whitesmith was a "trusted employee" who was fully aware of the victims' vulnerability, adding that it remained unclear what might have happened had the sleeping women woken up and confronted him.

In victim impact statements presented to the court, both residents described the "devastating effect" the burglaries have had on their sense of safety and well-being.
