Terrifying Ordeal for Shop Worker

A female shop worker was left fearing for her life after a masked man armed with a knife forced his way behind the counter of a local convenience store. The incident took place at the One Stop shop on Charlotte Street in Ilkeston at approximately 6:45 pm on May 1. CCTV footage presented at Derby Crown Court showed the perpetrator, with his hood up and face covered, entering the store while other shoppers were present. He aggressively pushed the shop worker aside before using a knife to pry the cash drawer from the till and fleeing the scene.

Prolific Offender Recently Released

The court heard that the attacker, identified as 40-year-old homeless man William Zygmuntowski, had been released from prison a mere three days before committing this terrifying offense. He had previously served an eight-month sentence for a string of 13 shoplifting offenses and was already subject to a Criminal Behaviour Order banning him from several retail chains in the area. Zygmuntowski pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and possession of a knife in a public place. In a poignant victim impact statement, the shop worker expressed her profound fear during the ordeal, stating she believed she was going to be stabbed. She was subsequently unable to return to work for two days due to the trauma.
