Desperate Knifeman Jailed for Armley Store Robbery Attempt Prompted by Threats Over Partner's Drug Debt
A desperate man who attempted to rob a local convenience store in Armley, Leeds, at knifepoint has been handed a significant prison sentence. Lance Mace committed the terrifying robbery in November 2024 in what was described as a frantic attempt to secure funds to settle his partner's outstanding drug debts.
Leeds Crown Court heard that Mace's partner had been subjected to severe threats of violence from drug dealers, who had given her a 48-hour ultimatum to clear the debt, threatening to steal her dog if she failed to pay. Mace, who had already suffered physical injuries at the hands of the same individuals, felt he had no choice but to take extreme measures.
Earlier on the day of the offense, Mace visited the Armley shop in an attempt to sell stolen items to a staff member, but the employee refused the transaction. Mace returned to the store later that day brandishing a knife. He approached the counter, pointed the weapon directly at the employee, and demanded cash from the till. The worker bravely refused to hand over the money, and Mace fled the scene empty-handed.
Mace was subsequently arrested and prosecuted for multiple offenses, including attempted robbery, possession of a bladed article, shop theft, and criminal damage related to a separate incident where he smashed a window at a man's flat. Acknowledging the dangerous nature of the offense, the judge sentenced Mace to an extended term of six years, comprising four years in custody and a two-year extended license period.
