Home Bargains Store Target of Destructive Paving Slab Burglary Spree Across Leeds
A serial offender who utilized paving stones and heavy objects to force entry into retail outlets across Leeds has been imprisoned. Noel Heatley, 46, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court for his role in a commercial burglary ring that targeted high-street brands, including a prominent Home Bargains store.
The prosecution detailed how Heatley and an accomplice carried out the raid at the Home Bargains store, using a heavy paving slab retrieved nearby to shatter the storefront glass. The method of entry caused substantial damage to the retail premises and allowed the thieves to ransack the store, targeting cash registers and high-value stock before fleeing the scene.
The raid was part of a larger, coordinated crime spree across the city. In addition to Home Bargains, the duo targeted a Wetherspoon pub, a Tesco petrol stationโwhere they forced the shutters and smashed a door panel with a brickโand a BP garage, where a night-shift worker was subjected to a terrifying robbery. The total cost of the damage and stolen property from the spree run into thousands of pounds.
Security footage and forensic traces left at the Home Bargains store and other targeted sites allowed police to quickly identify and arrest Heatley. The judge sentenced him to nearly four years in custody, highlighting that commercial burglaries of this nature cause significant distress to employees and massive disruption to local communities.
