Teen Spree Burglar Jailed After 12-Day Crime Wave Targeting Leeds Driveways

An 18-year-old habitual burglar described by a judge as a "habitual tearaway" has been jailed for 16 months after a destructive 12-day crime wave across Leeds. Dillon Owen targeted multiple residential properties, stealing four cars directly from driveways alongside valuable personal belongings, including designer coats, golf clubs, and a microwave.

Leeds Crown Court heard that Owen's spree took place over a two-week period in May 2024. The court was told how Owen infiltrated residential premises, specifically targeting keys to high-value vehicles parked outside. Among the areas targeted was Moorland Road in Leeds. In one particularly distressing incident, a victim who had saved up for his vehicle since the age of 13 had his car taken and its sentimental personalized number plates severely damaged.

The teenager's criminal activities were brought to an abrupt end following police investigations. Upon searching Owen's mobile phone, detectives uncovered a trove of incriminating evidence. This included photographs of a victim's bank card and active Snapchat conversations detailing plans to sell the stolen vehicles to third parties.

During the sentencing hearing, mitigation was presented highlighting Owen's background as a care leaver who had been heavily influenced by older peers and family members. However, the sentencing judge emphasized the severe and lasting psychological impact burglary has on victims in their own homes. Owen was sentenced to 16 months' detention in a young offender institution and was hit with a three-year driving disqualification.
