Leicester Burglar Leaves Behind Costly Mess After Stealing Training Note from Caffè Nero
Silver Street Coffee Shop Smashed
A serial criminal who broke into a Leicester city centre coffee shop in the early hours of the morning left the business facing thousands of pounds in damages and lost trade, all for the sake of a single, worthless prop banknote. William Wilcox, 25, appeared in court in February 2026 to face sentencing for the break-in at Caffè Nero on Silver Street.
A Blunder in the Dark
The incident occurred on the morning of January 21, 2026, at approximately 3:45 a.m. Wilcox used a half-brick to smash through the front window of the city centre coffee shop. Once inside, he ransacked the counter area and located a single £10 note. However, in a ridiculous blunder, the note Wilcox stole was actually a training prop used by Caffè Nero staff. The banknote was clearly marked with the word "fake" across its face and held zero monetary value. Despite the worthlessness of the haul, the physical destruction left behind was immense.
Massive Financial Impact
Although the thief walked away with nothing of value, the impact on the local business was severe. The cost of repairing the smashed window and damaged interior amounted to £1,900. Furthermore, because of the damage and the police investigation, the branch was unable to open for its peak morning trade, resulting in an additional £1,100 in lost takings. In total, the blunder cost the business approximately £3,000.
Caught on CCTV and Sentenced
Wilcox, who has an extensive criminal record including 46 previous offences, was quickly identified by police officers who reviewed the shop's CCTV footage. In court, he pleaded guilty to the commercial burglary, as well as to two separate shoplifting offences at local Next and Poundstretcher stores earlier that month. Acknowledging his persistent offending, the judge sentenced Wilcox to a custodial sentence, highlighting the significant economic damage caused to high street businesses by such reckless crimes.
