Swatch Stores Close for Second Day in Liverpool Amid Large Crowds

Safety Concerns Force Store Closures

Swiss watchmaker Swatch has been forced to close its retail stores in Liverpool and Manchester for a second consecutive day following overwhelming public demand. Enormous queues rapidly built up outside the branches as eager shoppers attempted to purchase the newly launched "Royal Pop" pocket watch, a highly anticipated collaboration with luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet retailing for £335. The stores were initially shut down on Saturday "due to safety considerations," mirroring closures at other UK branches in Birmingham, Sheffield, Glasgow, Cardiff, and London. Swatch issued an urgent social media plea, asking the public "not to rush to our stores in large numbers" and assuring customers that the product would remain available for several months.

Police Called to Manage Tense Crowds

The intense demand for the limited-edition watches, which have reportedly been resold online for staggering sums of up to £16,000, led to tense scenes outside several locations. In Liverpool, police resources were unexpectedly diverted after officers were called to respond to reports of individuals "making threats" within the massive crowds gathered outside the city centre store. Similar chaotic scenes were reported globally, including an arrest in Cardiff, police deployments in France and Switzerland, and a cancelled launch event in Dubai. Swatch defended its decision to pause sales, emphasizing that ensuring the safety of both staff and customers remains its absolute priority.

Managing High-Demand Retail Launches

Retailers launching highly anticipated, limited-edition products must prioritize crowd control and physical security to prevent public order offenses and potential commercial burglaries:

  • Employ dedicated, SIA-licensed security personnel specifically tasked with managing queues and maintaining order outside the premises.
  • Implement robust ticketing or online reservation systems to drastically reduce the necessity for physical queuing.
  • Ensure that highly valuable, limited-edition stock is stored securely in a reinforced safe or off-site, away from vulnerable shop floor displays.
