Brink's-Mat and John 'Goldfinger' Palmer: A Look Back at the 1983 Gold Robbery
On November 26, 1983, one of the most significant armed robberies in British history took place at Heathrow Airport's Brink's-Mat warehouse. A gang of thieves made off with three tonnes of gold bullion worth ยฃ26 million, triggering a massive search for the gold and the networks responsible for laundering it.
Among those linked to the aftermath was John 'Goldfinger' Palmer, a Bath-based businessman who was suspected of smelting down the stolen bullion to disguise its origins. Palmer, who earned his nickname from the case, was later acquitted of knowing the gold was stolen, though he was eventually jailed in 2001 for a massive timeshare fraud operation. He was shot dead under mysterious circumstances in 2015.
Renewed focus has been cast on Palmer and the Brink's-Mat robbery following a BBC follow-up television series titled 'The Gold', which explores the legacy of the crime and its profound impact on London's underworld and financial systems.
