Nottingham Serial Bar Burglar Jailed for 30 Months After Red Bull Can DNA Breakthrough
A serial commercial burglar who targeted several bars and retail shops in the center of Nottingham has been jailed for 30 months. The breakthrough in the case came when forensic investigators linked the perpetrator to a crime scene via DNA left on a discarded Red Bull energy drink can.
A Spree of Target Break-Ins
Over a period of several weeks, local businesses in Nottingham fell victim to a series of commercial break-ins. The burglar targeted popular bars and shops, causing significant disruption, property damage, and financial losses to independent business owners who were already struggling in a tough economic climate.
During one of the break-ins, the suspect left behind a half-empty can of Red Bull. Nottinghamshire Police's forensic unit recovered the item and ran DNA analysis on the saliva around the tab. The profile matched the suspect, who had a history of similar offenses, providing prosecutors with irrefutable evidence of his presence at the crime scene.
Sentenced to 30 Months
Appearing before Nottingham Crown Court, the defendant was faced with overwhelming evidence, including the DNA match and CCTV footage from the targeted premises. The judge sentenced the bungling thief to 30 months of immediate imprisonment, noting the impact of commercial burglary on the local economy and the peace of mind of business owners.
Nottinghamshire Police welcomed the sentence, highlighting the meticulous work of forensic officers in securing the conviction. “This case demonstrates that even the smallest piece of evidence left at a crime scene can be the key to bringing offenders to justice,” a spokesperson said.
