Hockley Coffee Shop Targeted in Costly Raids: Burglar Jailed After Using Wheelie Bin to Hide Crime
A popular coffee shop in Nottingham's trendy Hockley district has been left reeling after a series of targeted break-ins resulted in thousands of pounds of damage and stolen property. The incidents, which occurred at the Viet80s coffee shop on Goose Gate, have highlighted the ongoing security challenges faced by local independent businesses.
In the initial incident, which took place in August 2024, a masked group smashed their way into the premises. The owners were left devastated and faced a bill of approximately ยฃ10,000 in repair costs and lost revenue. The aggressive nature of the break-in caused significant alarm among the community and local business owners, who called for increased security measures in the area.
In a subsequent incident, 60-year-old Michael Hemmings targeted the same Goose Gate coffee shop. On January 5, at approximately 4:30 pm, Hemmings was observed attempting to hide his criminal activity by moving a wheelie bin to block the view of passersby. He then smashed a window to gain entry, rummaged through the shop, and made off with the cash register.
Following a prompt investigation by Nottinghamshire Police, Hemmings was identified, arrested, and subsequently charged. He was sentenced to four years and four months in prison. Local residents and business owners have welcomed the jail term, hoping it will act as a strong deterrent against future commercial burglaries in Hockley.
