Drunk burglar jailed after shattering Clifton family's peace in late-night raid
CLIFTON, NOTTINGHAM โ A Clifton family has been left devastated after a drunk burglar broke into their home, ransacking rooms and stealing valuable items to fund his alcohol addiction. Jake Barker, a resident of Gardendale Avenue, Clifton, pleaded guilty to the burglary at Nottingham Crown Court.
The court heard that in July 2025, Barker, who was highly intoxicated, was spotted by a neighbor urinating in a drain outside their property. Shortly afterward, Barker picked up a large rock and smashed the glass conservatory door of a nearby house to gain entry.
Valuables Stolen to Purchase Alcohol
Barker searched the home and stole items worth approximately ยฃ1,000, including a PlayStation console, a bass guitar, a DJ mixer, and jewelry. He later admitted that he stole the electronics and personal items to sell them for cash to buy more alcohol. The homeowners returned from a dinner out to find their property in disarray, with glass shattered and their belongings missing.
Severe Psychological Impact on the Victims
The burglary had a profound emotional effect on the family. In a victim personal statement, the female resident explained that the intrusion left her feeling so unsafe that she was forced to move out of the property and stay with her mother. Her partner also stated that their home had completely lost its "homely feeling" and that they were now actively looking to relocate from the area.
Barker's defense barrister noted that he was deeply remorseful and struggled with severe alcohol dependency. However, the judge highlighted Barker's extensive criminal record, which includes 23 court appearances for 45 offencesโincluding three prior domestic burglaries. Barker was handed a prison sentence and remanded in custody.
