Man Charged Following Burglary at Scunthorpe Tui Travel Agency
Rapid Police Response Leads to Arrest
Humberside Police have successfully apprehended and charged a suspect following an overnight break-in at a high street travel agency in Scunthorpe. During the early hours of Tuesday, June 2, patrol officers received an urgent notification regarding an active intruder alarm at the local Tui branch. Officers, supported by a specialized police dog unit, arrived at the scene within minutes of the initial alert. Upon inspecting the building, they discovered signs of forced entry and confirmed that several items had been stolen from the premises.
Suspect Found with Foreign Currency
A swift search of the surrounding area led police to locate a 34-year-old male a short distance from the travel agency. When searched, the suspect was found to be carrying a number of allegedly stolen items, notably including cash in various foreign currencies, highly indicative of a travel agency theft. He was immediately arrested on suspicion of commercial burglary and transported to Birchin Way Custody. Humberside Police later confirmed that the man has formally been charged.
A spokesperson for Tui confirmed the incident, stating: "The store was closed at the time, there were no staff present and there was no access to the shop floor. We are working closely with the police and a full investigation is under way." The branch was forced to close temporarily but reopened for normal business the following day.
Securing Commercial High Street Premises
Travel agencies and other businesses handling cash or high-value items must remain vigilant:
- Ensure intruder alarm systems are regularly serviced and directly linked to a police response or private security firm, as this rapid notification was key to this successful arrest.
- Do not store large quantities of foreign currency or cash on-site overnight; utilize secure, time-locked safes if overnight storage is unavoidable.
- Install visible, high-definition CCTV covering all entrances, exits, and till areas to act as a deterrent and aid post-incident investigations.
