Police Issue Warning Following Spate of Fiat 500 Thefts in Skelmersdale
Targeted "Smash and Grab" Thefts
A recent spate of targeted vehicle thefts has prompted a strong warning from Skelmersdale Police. Detectives have identified a distinct and worrying pattern involving the theft of Fiat 500 cars across Skelmersdale and over the border into Greater Manchester. In a string of identical incidents, perpetrators are gaining entry to the iconic city cars by smashing the windows.
Once inside the vehicle, the thieves tear apart the steering columns, deliberately break the ignition barrels, and expose the underlying wires to hotwire and start the engines. Curiously, after being stolen, the vehicles are frequently found abandoned shortly afterward.
Police Issue Urgent Advice for Owners
In a statement released on Facebook on June 10, a spokesperson for the force highlighted the severity of the situation: "We are making local residents aware of recent incidents involving thefts of Fiat 500s... The cars were done in the same way - windows smashed and entry gained with the ignition barrel broken and wires exposed."
Skelmersdale Police are now urging all Fiat 500 owners in the area to remain highly vigilant and to immediately step up their vehicle security to avoid falling victim to this targeted crime spree.
How to Secure Your Vehicle
Police have provided specific crime prevention advice for vehicle owners, particularly those with Fiat 500s:
- Always ensure that your vehicle's steering lock is fully engaged when parked.
- Utilize physical deterrents such as a heavy-duty steering wheel lock or pedal box.
- Consider installing aftermarket vehicle trackers or hiding smart tags within the car to aid in recovery if stolen.
- Whenever possible, keep vehicles secured in a locked garage or a well-lit, secure parking space.
- Ensure that absolutely no valuable items are left visible inside the vehicle and that car keys are hidden securely away from public view.
- Invest in a dashcam or home CCTV system pointing at your driveway to deter offenders and assist police with identification.
