St Albans Railway Cable Theft Causes Widespread Delays and Disruption
ST ALBANS, Hertfordshire โ Railway passengers traveling through St Albans experienced severe delays and cancellations on Saturday after a targeted theft of railway signalling cables disrupted services on the Midland Main Line.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, January 17, 2026, when thieves cut and stole copper signalling cables near St Albans. The theft caused immediate signalling failures, bringing Thameslink and East Midlands Railway services to a halt. Commuter links between Bedford, St Albans, and London St Pancras International were heavily disrupted throughout the day, with delays extending to over an hour and numerous services being cancelled entirely.
British Transport Police (BTP) have launched an investigation into the incident and are appealing for witnesses. "Cable theft is not a victimless crime," said a BTP spokesperson. "It causes massive disruption to thousands of passengers and presents a significant safety risk on the railway network." Network Rail engineers worked urgently throughout Saturday to repair the damage and replace the stolen copper wiring, with services returning to normal by Sunday morning.
