Rail Commuter Burglar Jailed for Multi-County Spree

Commuter Criminal's Cross-County Spree

A sophisticated serial burglar who treated his criminal activities like a nine-to-five job has been handed a substantial prison sentence. Darren Alleyne, 44, of no fixed abode, systematically utilized the railway network to travel across Surrey and Sussex, targeting towns including Woking, Horsham, Guildford, Reigate, and Merstham. Operating between July 2025 and March 2026, Alleyne would prowl residential streets searching for empty or insecure properties. Upon identifying a target, he would force entry through front or back doors, stuffing high-value items such as electronics and jewellery into a large shopping bag before calmly catching a train back out of the area to sell the stolen goods for cash.

Captured by CCTV and Doorbell Footage

To avoid detection, Alleyne regularly changed his mobile phone. However, his meticulous planning was ultimately undone by Surrey Police's Proactive Investigation Team, who painstakingly gathered crucial CCTV and smart doorbell footage placing him at the scenes of multiple break-ins. His spree ended when he was arrested in Brighton after traveling there by train; officers found him in possession of items stolen during local burglaries. Alleyne pleaded guilty to 10 counts of burglary and two counts of fraud by false representation. On Friday, May 15, he was sentenced to six years in prison at Guildford Crown Court. PC Luke Lightburn remarked: “Alleyne literally treated burglary as his job. He would commute regularly by train, find a place to break into, and brazenly travel home with a bag of stolen goods as if nothing had happened.”

Deterring Daytime Burglars

Thieves like Alleyne often operate during daytime working hours when homes are most likely to be unoccupied. Homeowners should ensure their property appears occupied:

  • Use smart plugs or mechanical timers to turn on radios and lamps on dark afternoons or when you are out for extended periods.
  • Install a visible, high-quality smart doorbell camera, which can alert you to individuals loitering on your doorstep and provide vital evidence to police.
  • Ensure all external doors, including those at the rear, are fitted with multi-point locking systems and are secured even when you are just popping out briefly.
