Albany Man Indicted for First-Degree Rape Following Lancaster Street Home Invasion
ALBANY, NY โ An Albany man is facing multiple felony charges, including first-degree rape and burglary, following a harrowing break-in at a Center Square apartment. The incident has raised safety concerns in the historic neighborhood and led to a swift arrest by local law enforcement.
According to court documents and police statements, 29-year-old Lamont Evans of Albany allegedly targeted a residence near the intersection of Lancaster and Dove streets. Investigators state that Evans gained entry to the first-floor apartment by climbing through an unsecured window during the early morning hours. Once inside, he confronted a female resident and subjected her to a violent sexual assault.
The victim was able to contact emergency services after the suspect fled the scene. She was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and forensic evidence collection. Following an intensive investigation by detectives, Evans was identified as the suspect and taken into custody without further incident. He has since been indicted by an Albany County grand jury on charges of Rape in the First Degree and Burglary in the First Degree, both class B violent felonies.
The District Attorney's office commended the victim's bravery and the rapid response of the police department. "We are committed to prosecuting violent crimes of this nature to the fullest extent of the law," said a spokesperson for the prosecution. Evans is currently being held at the Albany County Jail without bail pending his next court appearance.
