Albuquerque Police: Burglary suspect arrested after Nob Hill business owner shoots him
A burglary suspect is in police custody and recovering from non-life-threatening injuries after being shot by a business owner in Albuquerque's historic Nob Hill neighborhood. The confrontation occurred early Monday morning during an attempted break-in, renewing local debates over self-defense and commercial property security.
Confrontation in Nob Hill
Albuquerque Police officers responded to reports of gunfire at a business near Central Avenue around 4:00 AM on February 16, 2026. Upon arrival, officers located a male suspect suffering from a gunshot wound. Preliminary investigations indicate that the business owner, who was on the property at the time, confronted the suspect as he attempted to force his way inside. During the altercation, the owner discharged a firearm, striking the intruder.
"Business owners are feeling increasingly vulnerable, and this incident reflects the high tensions regarding commercial burglaries in the area," said a local neighborhood coalition member.
Investigation and Charges
The suspect was transported to a local hospital under police guard. Authorities confirmed that once cleared by medical staff, the suspect will be booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on charges of commercial burglary and criminal trespass. The Albuquerque Police Department's Crimes Against Persons unit is reviewing the shooting, but initial indications suggest the business owner acted in self-defense and is not currently facing charges.
