Copper Theft Attempt Sparks Gas Explosion at Atlanta Apartment Building

ATLANTA, GA — An attempt to steal copper from an apartment building in Atlanta took a catastrophic turn, resulting in a gas explosion that shook the surrounding neighborhood and caused significant structural damage.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, suspects attempted to sever and steal copper pipes within the building's infrastructure. In doing so, they inadvertently ruptured a live natural gas line. The leaking gas accumulated in the enclosed space until it found an ignition source, triggering a powerful blast that damaged parts of the apartment complex.

Emergency crews, including the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department and gas utility workers, rushed to the scene to secure the area, shut off the gas supply, and assess the structural integrity of the building.
