Atlanta ATM Thefts: Police Seek Suspect in Downtown Robbery and Warn of Malware 'Jackpotting'
ATLANTA, GA โ Metro Atlanta law enforcement and business owners are on high alert following a series of sophisticated security breaches and thefts targeting automatic teller machines (ATMs) across the region.
In a notable incident on February 26, 2025, Atlanta police responded to a theft at 101 Marietta Street NW in downtown Atlanta. According to reports, security guards were actively servicing an ATM when an unidentified suspect broke into their white GMC Acadia security vehicle. The suspect stole a large sum of cash from the vehicle before fleeing. The Atlanta Police Department issued a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) description for the suspect, who is described as a slim-built male, approximately 6 feet tall, wearing a light-green or gray hoodie and light-blue jeans.
This incident follows warnings from authorities regarding high-tech ATM "jackpotting" attacks. In September 2024, investigators uncovered a ring of thieves utilizing specialized malware to hack ATMs. The perpetrators physically access the ATM's internal computer systemโoften using USB drives or wired connectionsโto install malicious software. Once infected, the machine is commanded to dispense cash directly, draining thousands of dollars without compromising customer accounts. Local and federal agencies have been collaborating to trace these operations, which are often linked to organized criminal networks spanning multiple states.
Police are urging anyone with information on the Marietta Street theft or other ATM crimes to contact Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS (8477). Business operators are also advised to keep ATM firmware updated and secure physical access ports to protect against malware installation.
