Richmond County Deputy and Suspect Shot in Augusta Foot Chase Following Armed Robbery

AUGUSTA, Ga. — A Richmond County Sheriff’s Office deputy and an armed suspect were both shot and wounded during a dramatic foot chase in Augusta on October 2, 2025. The shootout occurred in the afternoon after deputies responded to an armed robbery call at a local business.

According to preliminary reports from the scene, the suspect fled on foot when deputies arrived. During the subsequent chase, the suspect opened fire on pursuing officers, hitting one deputy. The deputy returned fire, striking the suspect. The incident brought a heavy law enforcement presence to the residential neighborhood, with streets blocked off as backup units secured the area.

Both the deputy and the suspect were transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. The deputy's injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening, and they are expected to make a full recovery. The suspect remains in custody under medical supervision while charges are prepared. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been called in to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure in the state.
