Hero bystander injured, burglary suspect dead after South Austin officer-involved shooting

An officer-involved shooting at a South Austin strip mall on Thursday, August 28, 2025, has resulted in the death of a burglary suspect and injuries to a bystander who attempted to intervene.

According to the Austin Police Department, officers were tracking a suspect believed to be connected to a string of recent burglaries, including a particularly dangerous home invasion during which the suspect allegedly brandished a firearm at a resident. Officers located the suspect at a business in the 1800 block of West Slaughter Lane, inside a Thundercloud Subs restaurant.

When officers attempted to confront the suspect, the man drew a firearm. A nearby bystander courageously stepped in to assist the officers, attempting to tackle or restrain the suspect. During the subsequent struggle, officers fired their weapons, fatally wounding the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The intervening bystander was also struck by gunfire and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, for which he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

In early September 2025, APD released body camera footage of the incident as part of their standard protocol, providing a clearer look at the chaotic sequence of events. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcomes of concurrent internal affairs and criminal investigations.
