Neighbor thwarts northwest Bakersfield attempted burglary; police ask community for leads

BAKERSFIELD, California โ€” An attempted residential burglary in Northwest Bakersfield was successfully interrupted thanks to the quick thinking and vigilance of an alert neighbor. The Bakersfield Police Department is currently investigating the incident and seeking leads from the local community to identify the suspects involved.

The incident took place on the afternoon of Tuesday, December 23, 2025. According to reports from the BPD, a resident in a quiet Northwest Bakersfield neighborhood noticed suspicious activity at a nearby home. Knowing that the homeowners were away, the neighbor decided to investigate further and observed unfamiliar individuals attempting to force entry through a side window.

Vigilance Prevents Property Loss

Rather than confronting the suspects directly, the neighbor immediately called 911 and made their presence known by shouting towards the property. The noise and sudden attention startled the would-be intruders, who quickly fled the scene in a waiting vehicle before they could gain access to the interior of the home or steal any personal belongings.

Responding police officers arrived minutes later and searched the surrounding area, but the suspects had already departed. Crime scene investigators processed the exterior of the residence, collecting physical evidence and documenting damage to the window frame where the entry was attempted.

Community Cooperation is Vital

BPD officials have commended the actions of the neighbor, citing the incident as a prime example of community policing and neighborhood watch principles in action. "Having neighbors who look out for one another is one of the most effective deterrents to property crime," a department representative remarked.

Investigators are currently reviewing security camera footage from neighboring homes in hopes of obtaining a clear license plate number or a detailed description of the getaway vehicle. Anyone with security cameras in the area or who has information about the attempted break-in is encouraged to contact the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111.
