Restorative Justice in Waverly: Baltimore Business Owner Hugs Teen Who Burglarized Her Store
BALTIMORE, MD — In an extraordinary display of grace and restorative justice, 48-year-old Baltimore business owner Tia Hamilton embraced the young man who had burglarized her bookstore in court. Rather than pushing for a heavy prison sentence, Hamilton stood before a judge to advocate for a plea agreement that would offer the 20-year-old defendant a second chance at life.
Hamilton's business, Urban Reads Bookstore, located on Greenmount Avenue in the Waverly neighborhood of Baltimore, was broken into by the defendant. During the burglary, the man shattered one of the store's windows and stole a high-end camera valued at $2,000. Under normal sentencing guidelines, the offense could have resulted in a significant term of incarceration.
However, when the case came to court, Hamilton chose compassion over retribution. She addressed the young man directly, gave him a hug in front of the court, and told him, "This is what you need. You need hugs, and you need to be told, 'I love you.'" Hamilton voiced a strong conviction that incarceration often does little to rehabilitate young offenders, warning that it frequently does nothing more than create "a stronger monster."
Instead of prison, Hamilton supported a plea agreement under which the young man will perform community service directly with her at the bookstore. The goal is to provide him with mentorship, support, and professional skills to address the underlying lack of opportunities and resources that often drive youth toward criminal activity. Hamilton remains committed to helping guide him toward a productive future.
