Big Rapids: Minor Apprehended After Downtown Jewelry Store Break-in
In Big Rapids, Michigan, local authorities successfully apprehended a juvenile suspect involved in a break-in at a downtown jewelry store. The incident began early on Monday, June 1, when a passerby noticed shattered front glass at Rogers Jewelers, situated at 114 S. Michigan Ave., and alerted the authorities around 6:35 a.m. Upon arrival, Big Rapids police officers confirmed that the store had been burglarized and several items were missing.
Investigation and Foot Pursuit
The subsequent investigation by the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety quickly led to the identification of a juvenile suspect. Later that evening, at approximately 8:10 p.m., officers located the suspect for an interview. However, the situation escalated when the juvenile decided to flee on foot. A brief pursuit ensued, which ultimately ended with the suspect's capture in a nearby Taco Bell parking lot.
The juvenile is now facing multiple serious charges, including breaking and entering, possession of stolen property, and resisting and obstructing law enforcement. Unfortunately, one police officer sustained injuries during the foot chase. The officer was transported by Mecosta County EMS to Corewell Health Big Rapids Hospital for medical treatment and was later released.
The Big Rapids police expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by several local agencies, including the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office, the Ferris State University Department of Public Safety, and Meceola Central Dispatch, which helped bring the situation to a swift resolution.
