Intruder bathed, slept, ate & stole while Boston family was away on vacation

A Boston family returning from a summer vacation was left horrified to discover that an intruder had made herself completely at home in their South End condominium, treating the residence like a luxury hotel. According to local police and family members, the suspect not only lived in the apartment for days but also made off with thousands of dollars in jewelry and personal belongings.

Living in a Stranger's Home

The homeowners, who reside in a brownstone on Worcester Square, had been away on vacation when the intrusion occurred. During their absence, the suspect—later identified by Boston Police as Katie M.—managed to gain access to the property without showing any signs of forced entry. Once inside, she settled in, using the family's shower and bathtub, sleeping in their master bed, eating their food, and even using the homeowner's self-tanner.

The illusion of the vacant home came to an abrupt end on a Saturday evening when the homeowner's brother-in-law, who had agreed to stop by and check on the condo, walked in on the intruder. Confronted in the living space, the woman quickly gathered some items and fled the scene before police could arrive.

Stolen Valuables and Costly Cleanups

Following the confrontation, the family performed an inventory of their home, revealing a devastating list of missing items. Among the stolen goods were an engagement ring, family heirlooms, designer handbags, clothing, and high-end toiletries, totaling thousands of dollars. Additionally, the intruder left the home in a state that required extensive professional cleaning services, having ruined expensive linens, sheets, and towels.

“It is incredibly violating to know that someone was sleeping in our bed, wearing our clothes, and going through our personal things while we were away,” the homeowner told reporters.

A Pattern of Behavior

Investigators quickly linked the suspect to a similar incident. Katie M. had been arrested just the day prior for an attempted break-in on nearby East Springfield Street. However, she had been released on personal recognizance shortly before entering the Worcester Square home. Neighbors in the South End have expressed growing frustration over a recent string of burglaries, urging city officials and the police department to take stronger measures against repeat offenders in the area.
