Suspects dressed as city workers in another Boston home invasion, police say

The Boston Police Department has issued a community alert following a terrifying home invasion in the Dorchester neighborhood, where suspects disguised as city utility workers forced their way into a residence and held the occupant at gunpoint. This represents the latest in a series of targeted break-ins utilizing municipal disguises.

Disguised as Public Servants

According to police reports, the incident occurred at an apartment complex along Blue Hill Avenue. Two men wearing high-visibility yellow safety vests, hard hats, and face masks knocked on the victim's door, claiming to be conducting emergency maintenance for the city. When the resident opened the door to verify the issue, the suspects drew handguns and forced their way inside.

Once inside the apartment, the intruders subjected the resident to a terrifying ordeal. The victim was bound with zip ties and duct tape while the suspects ransacked the home, searching for cash, jewelry, and electronics. The suspects fled the scene on foot, leaving the victim bound. Fortunately, the victim was eventually able to free themselves and call 911, suffering minor physical injuries but severe emotional distress.

“Posing as city workers is a particularly insidious tactic because it preys on people's willingness to cooperate with public servants,” a Boston Police spokesperson stated. “We want to remind all residents that they have the right to demand official identification before opening their doors.”

A Dangerous Trend

Detectives from District C-11 are investigating the robbery and looking for connections to a similar incident reported earlier in the month on Adams Street. In that case, suspects with similar descriptions also attempted to gain entry using construction disguises but were deterred when the homeowner became suspicious and refused to open the door.

The police department is reminding the public that official city employees and utility workers carry photo identification cards and drive marked city vehicles. Residents are encouraged to call the utility company or 911 to verify the identity of any worker requesting entry to their home if they did not schedule an appointment. Investigations are ongoing, and police are urging anyone with surveillance footage or information to contact detectives.
