Flash Mob Targets Louis Vuitton on Magnificent Mile, Escapes with $150,000 in Luxury Handbags
CHICAGO, IL โ A coordinated flash mob of shoplifters targeted the high-end Louis Vuitton boutique on Chicago's Magnificent Mile on Wednesday afternoon, escaping with an estimated $150,000 worth of luxury handbags and accessories in a matter of seconds.
The brazen theft took place around 3:15 p.m. on July 23, 2025, at the retailer's flagship location on the 900 block of North Michigan Avenue. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a fleet of vehicles pull up near the curb before a group of 10 to 15 individuals rushed into the store simultaneously, catching security guards and sales associates completely off guard.
Overwhelming Store Security
Once inside, the suspects swarmed the display racks, grabbing dozens of designer handbags, backpacks, and small leather goods. Some suspects reportedly used wire cutters to bypass security cables securing the most expensive items to display stands. Security personnel tried to intervene, but the sheer size and speed of the group allowed them to overwhelm the staff without any physical altercation taking place.
Within less than a minute, the group rushed back out the front doors and piled into several waiting vehiclesโincluding a silver Infiniti sedan and a black Jeep Cherokeeโwhich fled northbound on Michigan Avenue and onto the nearby Lake Shore Drive ramp.
The Chicago Police Department's Organized Retail Crime Task Force has taken over the investigation. High-definition security footage from inside the store, as well as city street cameras, is being analyzed. Business leaders along the Magnificent Mile have renewed calls for increased police presence and stronger security measures to combat the persistent threat of coordinated retail theft rings targeting the iconic shopping district.
