Cook County Deputy Injured as Fleeing ATM Theft Suspect Commandeers Patrol Car; 4 Arrested
CHICAGO, IL — A Cook County sheriff's deputy was injured during a chaotic confrontation with ATM theft suspects in Chicago, officials confirmed. The incident escalated rapidly when one of the suspects managed to commandeer the deputy's squad car and strike him with it while attempting to flee the scene.
Law enforcement responded to a call regarding an ongoing ATM burglary. Upon arrival, deputies confronted several suspects. During the ensuing struggle, a suspect gained access to a marked sheriff's patrol vehicle. In a desperate bid to escape, the suspect put the vehicle in motion, striking a deputy who was on foot.
Following a brief pursuit and coordinated response from multiple law enforcement units, four suspects were apprehended and taken into custody. The injured deputy was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. His injuries, while serious, are reported to be non-life-threatening.
Charges against the four individuals are currently pending as Chicago police and the Cook County Sheriff's Office continue their joint investigation into the burglary and subsequent assault on the officer.
