Jeep Used in Early Morning Smash-and-Grab Attempt at Brighton Park Currency Exchange
CHICAGO (FOX32) โ Chicago Police detectives are investigating a smash-and-grab burglary attempt that took place early Wednesday morning at a currency exchange on the city's Southwest Side.
The incident occurred on April 29, 2026, at approximately 5:13 a.m. at the PLS Check Cashers located in the 2400 block of West 47th Street in the Brighton Park neighborhood. According to police reports, a group of suspects drove a dark-colored Jeep into the building's facade to force their way inside.
Offenders Leave Jeep in Ruined Storefront
The impact of the vehicle caused substantial damage to the currency exchange's exterior. After breaching the storefront, the offenders fled the scene in an unknown direction, leaving the dark-colored Jeep behind in the wreckage. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the suspects managed to steal any cash or property before they fled.
No injuries were reported during the incident, as the business was closed. Officers arrived to find the Jeep embedded in the front of the business, with shattered safety glass and debris strewn across the sidewalk along 47th Street.
Investigation and Auto Theft link
Detectives are investigating if the Jeep used in the crime had been previously reported stolen, a common pattern in vehicle-ramming retail burglaries. Police are also examining surveillance tapes from nearby intersections and businesses to identify the suspects and determine the direction of their escape.
No suspects are currently in custody. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Chicago Police Department Area One detectives.
