Burglars Target Newly-Opened Hyde Park Bakery La Boulangerie
CHICAGO (WLS) — A newly opened bakery in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood became the latest target of commercial burglars early Thursday morning, raising security concerns among local business owners and residents.
According to Chicago police, the incident occurred at La Boulangerie, a French bakery located near the busy intersection of 55th Street and Lake Park Avenue. Authorities responded to reports of a break-in and discovered signs of forced entry at the storefront.
Burglary at La Boulangerie
While the bakery had only recently opened its doors to the local community, it was quickly targeted by thieves. Police are currently investigating the entry method and compiling an inventory of stolen property or cash registers that may have been damaged or removed during the heist.
Area detectives are reviewing security footage from nearby businesses and street cameras. No suspects are currently in custody, and police have not released descriptions of any individuals or getaway vehicles involved in the incident.
Rising Commercial Burglaries Concern Locals
Hyde Park, home to the University of Chicago, has seen a mix of local retail growth and occasional spurts of property crime. Business owners in the area are expressing frustration, noting that even newly established storefronts are not immune to break-ins. Police advise merchants to keep lights on inside stores overnight, secure registers, and ensure surveillance systems are active and functional.
Anyone with information regarding the burglary is urged to contact the Chicago Police Department’s Area Central detectives.
