CHICAGO, IL — A series of coordinated commercial burglaries targeting automated teller machines (ATMs) occurred across Chicago's Northwest Side early Sunday, prompting warnings for local business owners. A group of thieves carried out multiple break-ins in rapid succession, focusing specifically on retrieving cash from in-store terminals.

The incidents took place on February 1, 2026. In each instance, the suspects forced entry into commercial businesses—including convenience stores and small retail shops—during the overnight or early morning hours. Once inside, the group focused their efforts entirely on the business's ATM units, attempting to either pry them open on-site or remove the machines entirely.

Pattern of ATM Thefts

The Northwest Side has seen a rise in commercial break-ins over recent months, but this specific spree underscores a highly targeted approach. Business owners reported substantial property damage, with shattered glass facades, broken security gates, and damaged interior fixtures left in the wake of the heists.

Chicago Police Department detectives from Area Five are investigating the break-ins, examining security footage to determine if the same crew is responsible for all of the night's incidents.
