South Side Chicago Convenience Store Owner Exchanges Gunfire with Attempted Burglars

CHICAGO, Illinois — An attempted commercial burglary escalated into an armed confrontation overnight on Chicago's South Side, where a local business owner defended his establishment by exchanging gunfire with suspects.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the incident occurred during the early hours of Thursday, January 4, 2024. A group of individuals attempted to force entry into a convenience store. The owner, who was inside the building at the time, heard the break-in attempt and went to investigate. Upon encountering the armed suspects, the owner drew his personal firearm, leading to a shootout between both parties.

The suspects fled the scene immediately after the gunfire erupted. No injuries were reported from the store owner, and it remains unclear if any of the suspects were struck during the exchange. Police recovered multiple shell casings outside the storefront, and Area Detectives are currently investigating the incident. No suspects are currently in custody.
