Spree of Commercial Smash-and-Grabs Targets Borinken Cakes Bakery and Other Businesses in Archer Heights and Garfield Ridge
CHICAGO — A wave of commercial burglaries and smash-and-grabs targeted several local businesses on Chicago's Far Southwest Side early Tuesday morning, leaving neighborhood merchants on edge and facing costly storefront repairs.
According to police and local news reports, the break-ins occurred in the Archer Heights and Garfield Ridge communities, with thieves shattering glass storefronts to gain quick entry and ransack cash registers. Among the hardest-hit establishments was Borinken Cakes, a highly popular Puerto Rican bakery renowned for its traditional pastries and cakes.
Surveillance footage captured the moments when the suspects, wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks, smashed through the bakery's front door. Once inside, they went straight for the cash register, executing the theft in under two minutes before fleeing the scene in a waiting vehicle. Nearby establishments were also targeted in a similar fashion during the same overnight hours.
Business owners in the area expressed growing concern over the recent uptick in retail thefts. The Chicago Police Department's Area One detectives are currently investigating the pattern, looking into surveillance video from multiple businesses to see if they are linked to a single crew operating on the city's southwest side. No arrests have been made, and community members are urged to come forward with any information.
