Humboldt Park Dress Shop Broken Into Amid Prom Order Controversy
CHICAGO โ A designer dress shop in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood was targeted in an overnight smash-and-grab burglary, adding a new layer of drama to a business already facing intense public scrutiny. The incident occurred on North Pulaski Road on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
Chicago Police responded to a call regarding a break-in at the boutique, where they found shattered windows and signs of a rapid ransacking. According to preliminary reports, thieves forced entry into the boutique and stole several high-end garments and design materials. The extent of the stolen inventory and financial loss has not yet been fully determined by the shop owners.
The burglary comes at a highly contentious time for the boutique. In recent weeks, several customers and high school students had voiced public frustration and staged protests, claiming that their custom-designed prom dresses were being withheld or unfulfilled despite deposits being paid. Social media accounts had been flooded with complaints from anxious families worried their children would not have their dresses in time for prom season.
Investigators are exploring all possibilities, including whether the break-in is connected to the growing customer disputes or if it was an opportunistic commercial burglary. The Chicago Police Department's Area Detectives are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the store and surrounding businesses. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains open.
