Teen charged in Corryville robbery, fatal shootout said he 'didn't mean to shoot' victim

CINCINNATI, Ohio โ€” A young suspect faces serious felony charges, including murder and aggravated robbery, after an attempted robbery in Cincinnati's Corryville neighborhood ended in a fatal shootout. According to court records, the teenager admitted to his involvement but claimed to investigators that he did not intend to fire the weapon at the victim.

Attempted Robbery Turns Fatal

The incident occurred in the residential and commercial area of Corryville, close to the University of Cincinnati campus. Investigators state that the suspect and an accomplice confronted the victim in an attempt to rob him. The encounter quickly escalated when a struggle ensued and firearms were discharged. The victim suffered fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was apprehended shortly after following a brief pursuit by patrol officers.

Claims of Accidental Discharge

During questioning, the teen suspect reportedly expressed remorse, claiming the handgun discharged accidentally during the physical struggle and that he "didn't mean to shoot" anyone. However, prosecutors emphasize that under Ohio's felony murder law, if a death occurs during the commission of a first- or second-degree felony like aggravated robbery, any participant can be charged with murder regardless of intent. The case has sparked renewed discussions about youth gun violence in the city.
