Des Moines: Teen dies following downtown robbery and deadly shootout

Fatal Shooting Follows Attempted Armed Robbery

A violent and chaotic incident in downtown Des Moines has tragically resulted in the untimely death of a local teenager. The frightening incident originally took place on the evening of May 22, when police officers rapidly responded to numerous frantic reports of gunfire near the well-known Pappajohn Sculpture Park, located near the busy intersection of 14th Street and Grand Avenue. Upon their immediate arrival at the chaotic scene, law enforcement officials discovered a 17-year-old male who had been critically injured by gunfire. A subsequent police investigation quickly revealed that the injured teen was part of a small group of individuals who had brazenly attempted to commit an armed robbery against a 22-year-old man who was sitting quietly inside his parked vehicle at the time of the unprovoked attack.

Exchange of Gunfire Leads to Tragic Death and Arrests

According to official statements and updates from the Des Moines Police Department, the tense robbery situation quickly escalated into deadly violence. During the initial robbery attempt, one of the teen's accomplices was already armed with a loaded gun. The 17-year-old suspect then reportedly managed to steal a firearm directly from the 22-year-old victim. However, the intended victim was legally armed with a second, concealed gun, which directly led to a sudden, close-quarters exchange of gunfire between the involved parties. Following the terrifying shootout, two separate firearms were safely recovered directly from the crime scene by investigating forensics teams. Despite receiving intensive and ongoing medical treatment, police sadly confirmed that the critically injured 17-year-old ultimately succumbed to his severe gunshot wounds and passed away on June 3. Following the deadly incident, a 16-year-old male accomplice was successfully arrested by authorities and formally charged with first-degree robbery in direct connection with the underlying crime. The ongoing case has now been officially referred to juvenile court as homicide detectives continue their thorough and detailed investigation into the full circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
