Man Pistol-Whipped and Carjacked During Morning Coffee Run at Detroit Gas Station

DETROIT, Michigan — A routine stop for morning coffee turned violent for a 61-year-old Detroit resident who was pistol-whipped and carjacked at a local gas station. The attack, which left the victim requiring emergency surgery, took place at the Amoco station situated at 10001 Fenkell Avenue on Detroit's west side.

According to prosecutors, the victim was sitting in his vehicle when he was approached by 36-year-old Bryan Cordarill Wilkins. Wilkins suddenly pulled the driver's door open, pointed a Glock handgun at the driver, and demanded his car keys and cash. During the confrontation, Wilkins violently pistol-whipped the older driver before speeding off in the stolen vehicle.

Severe Injuries and Hospitalization

The victim suffered significant trauma from the assault. He was hospitalized for three days and underwent emergency surgery on his left arm to repair the damage inflicted by the pistol-whipping. Medical professionals indicated that the victim is expected to face a long recovery, with at least six months before regaining full use of his arm.

Suspect Apprehended in Stolen Vehicle

The Detroit Police Department tracked down the suspect three days after the incident. On July 21, 2024, officers spotted Wilkins still operating the victim's stolen vehicle and took him into custody without further incident. Wilkins faces multiple felony charges, including carjacking, armed robbery, and carrying a firearm during the commission of a felony. He remains held under bond as the judicial process proceeds.
