Thieves Ram Stolen Pickup Truck into Detroit Sneaker Shop in Smash-and-Grab
DETROIT, Michigan — A prominent sneaker and apparel boutique on Detroit's fashion avenue was left in ruins after a group of thieves used a stolen pickup truck to ram their way inside during a coordinated smash-and-grab burglary.
The incident occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at Culture DET, a popular local shop located on Livernois. According to surveillance footage and police reports, a crew of approximately six suspects backed a stolen pickup truck directly into the glass storefront. The impact shattered the building's facade, creating an opening large enough for the thieves to rush inside and sweep shelves of premium clothing and sneakers.
A Short Police Pursuit
Detroit Police officers responded to the scene within minutes of the alarm. Upon arrival, officers spotted the suspects attempting to flee in a getaway vehicle. A brief pursuit ensued, but officers ultimately terminated the chase in accordance with department policy, which limits high-speed pursuits for property-related crimes to ensure public safety.
Small Business Struggles
Juanzel Smith, the co-owner of Culture DET, expressed his frustration and exhaustion, noting that this is not the first time his business has been targeted by commercial burglars.
"It's tough when you're trying to build something positive in the city and people just destroy it in seconds," Smith said. "We have to keep cleaning up and rebuilding, but it takes a heavy toll."
Police are investigating the theft and looking for links to other similar smash-and-grab incidents in the Metro Detroit area. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Detroit Police Department.
