Conviction Secured in 2023 Walmart Parking Lot Shooting in Elyria
ELYRIA, Ohio โ Legal proceedings have concluded for a deadly shooting that shook the Elyria retail district, as a jury rejected a self-defense claim and convicted the shooter of murder.
The incident occurred in November 2023 in the parking lot of the Walmart located at 1000 Chestnut Commons Drive in Elyria. According to trial testimonies, the victim, 21-year-old Nick Tubbs, and the suspect, 20-year-old Roosevelt Benton, met at the location to conduct an illegal marijuana transaction.
Robbery Identified as Motive
During the trial, the lead detective and prosecutors established that robbery was the primary motive behind the encounter, which quickly turned violent. Benton pulled a firearm and shot Tubbs, who later died of his wounds.
Taking the stand in his own defense, Benton claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that the victim attempted to rob him first during the drug deal. However, prosecutors presented evidence detailing the planned nature of the robbery, convincing the jury that Benton was the aggressor.
Jury Verdict and Conviction
In February 2025, the Lorain County jury rejected Benton's self-defense argument. They found him guilty of murder, felonious assault, and carrying a concealed weapon. Benton remains in state custody awaiting formal sentencing.
